Policy Writing

Policy writing is just one arm of social justice, but an important one at that. At first glance, this type of writing may not seem as sexy as what we do in our social media channels, blogs, or videos, but it has its place, and can and should make an impact.

From op-eds to press releases to white papers to organizational procedures, policy writing covers a lot of territory. Knowing how to communicate effectively in these areas is a great skill to build. In this section, you’ll find resources that share best practices and templates. Start with the basics, and then personalize them for your (or your org’s) goals.

3 Quick Tips

01.

Express your opinions clearly and persuasively.  When you broadcast your views widely with a well-written, timely op-ed, it’s got the potential to reach millions of people, sway hearts, change minds, and perhaps even reshape public policy.

02.

Give your topic the attention it deserves.

Make headlines for your news or event with a well-crafted press release. It’s an easy, efficient mode of sharing factual info with a wide audience. Press releases also allow you to interact with media outlets to build those relationships which are a key part of potent activism.

03.

Write in a simple, consistent style.

Many policy documents serve as persuasive pleas to non-academic audiences (think: agencies and organizations). When you focus on prescriptive questions with solutions geared to address critical issues, you'll drive attention to topics that matter in your community.
